What is Functional Medicine?
According to the Institute for Functional Medicine- The functional medicine model is an individualized, patient-centered, science-based approach that empowers patients and practitioners to work together to address the underlying causes of disease and promote optimal wellness. It requires a detailed understanding of each patient's genetic, biochemical, and lifestyle factors and leverages that data to direct personalized treatment plans that lead to improved patient outcomes.
What does all that mean?
It means you and your provider work together to understand the root causes of your illness and address those causes to help you achieve Solid wellness.
What are some of the most common conditions we address at Solid Wellness?
- Constipation
- Headaches
- Muscle pain
- Low sex drive
- Gassiness
- Food sensitivities
- Frequent joint injuries
- IBS
- Fatigue
- Menopause
- Brain fog
- Gluten Intolerance
All of these symptoms can commonly be treated by looking at three pillars:
Hormone, Thyroid and Gut health
Hormone Health
Hormones are the chemical messengers in our bodies. If hormones are not well balanced, nothing works well, and you do not feel good. Hormone symptoms can include mood changes, heavy or irregular periods, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, acne, low sex drive, weight gain, loss of muscle, and many others! If hormone replacement is needed, we use bio-identical hormones, meaning they are chemically identical to what your body naturally makes.
Thyroid Health
It is estimated that up to 20 million Americans have thyroid dysfunction, and about 60% of them do not even know it.
Thyroid symptoms can include weight gain, fatigue, low mood, constipation, dry skin, anxiety, hair loss, hormone changes, and many other symptoms.
Did you know that levothyroxine is not the right thyroid replacement medication for a large number of people? If you are on thyroid replacement and not feeling optimal, we can help!
Gut Health
There is a saying in functional medicine, "It all starts in the gut," and that's true. If your gut is not healthy, symptoms can include gassiness, bloating, mood changes, frequent sinus infections, rashes, allergies, constipation or loose stools, indigestion, and more.
Have you been told it's "just IBS"? That's not really an answer. You don't have to live with chronic constipation, diarrhea, or other gut symptoms. Let's get to the root cause and heal your gut.
What do we not treat at Solid Wellness?
Functional medicine can be excellent for treating complicated conditions like heavy metal toxicity, mold, POTS, and Lyme disease, but we do not treat these at Solid Wellness. We would be happy to give you recommendations for area providers who are experts in these conditions.
